"Above, part of the picturesque little square frequented by many of the artists in Puebla, and close to where I was invited to the opening night of an art exhibition.

Puebla, the forth largest city in Mexico, with a population of around 700,000, stood at an altitude of 6,200ft. The city has athe distinction of being the only one in Mexico not to be built on the site of a previous native city. Planned by the Bishop of Tlaxcala as a new Spanish city in 1531, it soon became an important staging post between Mexico City and Veracruz; as well as being a centre of the country’s ceramic and tile manufacture, due to the abundance of good clays in the area. In recent years the world’s largest Volkswagen Plant has been built here.

In the evening after I returned to Puebla, I visited a part of the city frequented by the local artists, and found myself being invited to the opening night of an exhibition by some of them. It turned out to be an interesting opportunity to meet the artists of the area and see some of their work, as well as show a few of them some of my work. I was only sorry I could not speak more Spanish, I feel sure there would have been a lot we could have talked about." - MH
