"While sitting on the pavement to paint this picture I was brought a chair by a local shopkeeper.

I made the short excursion to Gualaceo on a crowded bus from Cuenca, mainly to visit the local Sunday market, which I had read would be an interesting experience. It was. As well as the market, I found the town to be an attractive and picturesque place, making the day a most enjoyable and fulfilling one; the roast pork served with fried mash potato cake, that a lady was selling, was so delicious I found myself going back for several helpings.

Close to the market a group of folk musicians entertained a crowd in a park. At the end of their performance they came round selling tapes of their music, and I was able to buy one. It turned out to be very good and made a nice souvenir, and whenever I play it, it takes me right back to that day." - MH
