You will find the Church of San Salvador in the Plaza del Himno Square.
Built around 1516 it is the oldest church in Cuba, and incredibly escaped the famous fire of 1869.
"It is also claimed that the Cuban national anthem was composed here in 1867" - MH
"Having finally arrived, I soon found a hotel with a very friendly manager who offered me a nice spacious room that even had an A.C. unit, a real asset I felt considering the temperature must have been around the hundred° mark outside. Unfortunately, shortly after my arrival there was a power cut which was not restored 'til gone 8pm.
That evening I had the first of what were to be many candle lit suppers in Cuba, but only after having helped the cook in the kitchen by shining my torch so he could see what he was cooking.
Bayamo turned out to be a pleasant and quite enjoyable place for me to spend a couple of nights, even if it did get very hot during the middle part of the day. I was pleased to see that some of the more historical buildings were being restored to their former glory. I was told so they would be ready for the expected influx of tourists. There were none here on my visit." - MH
