"Part of the interesting market in the old town.

After numerous hold ups, and delays between rides from Ségou, I eventually reached Mopti on an overnight bus from San, where I had been able to sleep in the bus station office 'till 11:30pm, the time the bus was ready to leave. Arriving at 6:00am as we did, at least gave me the chance to book into a hotel and have a full day ahead of me to explore this fascinating town.

Mopti, with a population of around 40,000, is an important port being at the point where the Niger and Bani rivers meet. Though an old town, its commerce became greatly increased when, at the turn of the century, a 7 1/5 mile long causeway was constructed across the swamp and joined the town to the main road." - MH
