The SS Nyanza was a passenger-cargo steamer on Lake Victoria.
"The ship above moored up at the docks in Kisumu, I was told by my guide it was built in Glasgow in 1900. As the railway at that time only went as far as Nairobi the ship was sent out in small pieces no bit weighing more than 70lb, the most a porter could carry. On the first attempt the porters got attacked by an unfriendly tribe and half the ship was lost. When the ship finally got launched on the lake it had taken 5 years and finished up costing 4 times as much as it had first cost to build in Glasgow." - MH
