Camagüey is Cuba's third largest city with a population of over 321,000 inhabitants.
After being re-routed to Havana Martin writes:
"...by this time all the public transport had long gone, so a friendly airport attendant, speaking good English, arranged for me to have a lift on their staff bus to the centre and one of the city's hotels. Touring the dark unlit suburbs of Camaguey, as the staff were slowly dropped off at their respective homes, was not quite how I had expected to start this visit, but at least I had arrived and was experiencing the real Cuba.
The Colin Hotel (Hotel Camagüey Colón) where I was dropped off turned out to be full, but they let me sit in their comfortable lounge til morning, when at 8:30am a room became vacant, and though fairly basic it was clean and the shower worked. The room cost me $12, much less than I had been led to expect to have to pay.
My impressions of Camaguey were of a city that had seen much better days. The state I found things took me back to my early memories of childhood in England during the late 1940's. Nearly everything seemed to be on rations, most of the buildings were in a bad state of repair and what few vehichles there were looked like they were of a bygone age." - MH
