Lamu or Lamu Town is a small town on Lamu Island. This diverse island has become a variety of cultures and traditions from all its European, African, Arab and Asian influences. Lamu Old Town was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2001
"At first I found it hard to accept what a relaxing place Lamu was. Like Mombasa, it had a distinctly Arab/oriental flavour, with all the interest of an old, once wealthy port, but unlike Mombasa there were no new developments, no cars, and once out of town no roads. The archipelago was first settled by Arab sailors in the 7th century and soon became an important trading community for the export of ivory, rhinoceros horn and tortoise shell that were readily available in the area. It is said that many Arabs that came to the East African coast found life pleasanter with the local tribesmen than at home so decided to stay. With them they bought their religion and culture that still remains a vibrant society, yet in love with its traditions. I was told that Lamu people were dubious about the merits of what we would term progress. I hope things can stay that way for a little longer " - MH
