"Rangoon's most spectacular attraction by far. Despite a large number of people being about, I was able to sit in the shade and enjoy painting this picture without being bothered at all.
This huge bell shaped guilded pagoda, which rises to 98 metres (over 300ft) from it's base, forms the centrepiece of a large complex of shrines and temples built on a hilltop platform about 11/2 miles north of the city centre. The current pagoda dates from 1760, though it's claimed there has been a temple on the site for over 2000 years.
To visit this temple I was charged a $5 entrance fee, a bit steep I thought at first, but as I finished up spending most of an afternoon in the complex, and couldn’t help but be impressed at the size and curiosity of it all, I didn’t feel it was too bad on reflection." - MH
