Blackburn Cathedral was formerly the parish church of St Mary the Virgin, and only become a cathedral in 1926. Essentially Georgian in design it is possible the cathedral foundations may date back to the 5th century. The Domesday Book shows the church being already established by the reign of Ethelred the Unready (978 - 1016) no less.
